New insight shows rising interest in switching to an electric vehicle.

As the UK moves towards its net zero goals, we are seeing a huge rise in interest from customers in installing green tech at home that is designed to help cut costs and carbon.

OVO's latest report reveals that EV chargers are the most popular of all the home tech, topping the list for customer interest. There has been a tenfold rise in the number of customers expressing interest in EV chargers in the last four years, with 2024 marking a significant jump and accounting for 40% of all customer queries.

Top questions around EVs include checking if the home is suitable for an EV charger, how to install one and the length of time it takes to charge an EV. Customers are also keen to understand more about smart charging, which enables drivers to charge their vehicle from home at off-peak times when energy is typically cheaper and greener.

Solar panels are the second most popular tech topic, followed by heat pumps and smart thermostats.

Interest in solar has rocketed in the last year - more than doubling - with the highest number of queries coming in over the summer months. Customers most frequently ask how long solar panels last, whether planning permission is needed and if they require direct sunlight to work - as well as how long it takes to see a return on investment.

Heat pump queries doubled in 2024 compared to the previous year, with interest peaking in colder months. Customers largely want to know if heat pumps work in any home and when it’s really cold, whether they are noisy, how long it takes to install and what financial support is available.
