Impact of solar panels on electricity consumption

Solar panels cut electricity use by around a third and could save households up to £1,300 on energy bills

Households could save £1,300 a year with OVO’s full solar package of panels, batteries, inverters and its Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) rate of 20p/kWh. Even without the SEG tariff, people who install solar panels, batteries and inverters can save up to 85% on their electricity bills.

Around 120,000 households have installed rooftop solar panels this year already. Our data shows that solar panels can cut electricity use by approximately a third, potentially saving households a substantial sum of money on their energy bills. And with the option to sell back energy to cut bills further, it’s easy to understand the attraction.

At a time when sustainability and eco-consciousness have become paramount, it's no surprise that solar panels continue to be a popular choice for homeowners, with recent consumer research by OVO revealing 65% of Brits reporting they would like the Government to prioritise solar in order to make the UK a clean energy superpower.

The effectiveness of solar panels may vary based on property type and which direction your roof is. However, advancements in solar technology have made it possible to harness solar energy even in less-than-ideal conditions, making it a viable option for most homes.

On average, a typical home consumes around 2,932 kWh of electricity annually. The integration of a battery system enables homeowners to store excess electricity generated during sunny days for use during the night or when the sun isn't shining. It also enables them to sell surplus energy back to their energy provider, such as OVO, creating an additional income stream.
