9 million households missing out on cleaner, cheaper heating
Around a third (30%) of all UK homes are suitable for a heat pump, yet just 2% have actually installed one. That represents a huge missed opportunity, with 9 million households missing out on the chance to switch to cleaner, cheaper heating, as well as savings of up to £375 every year.
The UK-wide heat pump potential for households could be even higher. Right now, a startling 11.5 million homes across the UK can’t be assessed for their heat pump suitability because their EPC data - used to determine how efficient a heat pump would be - is outdated or incomplete. This leaves millions of households unaware of whether or not they could reap the benefits of heat pumps.
The south east and north west of England lead the way in terms of the number of homes that are heat pump-ready but haven’t made the switch.
Scotland is top of the league tables when it comes to the UK heat-pump installation rate, with 1.2 % of homes fitted with heat pumps, compared to 0.6% in England and Wales.
But when it comes to sheer numbers, England dominates, due to its higher population density. Overall, English households account for 78% of all heat pump installations, while Scotland accounts for 17%.
